Fifth City Commons Opens, Bringing 43 Affordable Housing Units To East Garfield Park

..."EAST GARFIELD PARK — A $38 million affordable housing development is now open in East Garfield Park, with more than three dozen apartment units that are expected to be filled quickly.

Fifth City Commons, 3155 W. Fifth Ave., began construction in July 2023 as a project by Preservation of Affordable Housing. The development started accepting leasing applications in April 2024, and it officially opened Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by local and federal elected officials, including Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Fifth City Commons represents a continued investment in West Side communities, Johnson said, referencing the Fifth City movement on Chicago’s West Side in the 1960s for which the building is named.

“This movement was a powerful example of radical community organizing from the 1960s, and the development of Fifth City Commons continues the movement’s legacy by fostering community revitalization and empowerment,” Johnson said."
