    Jesse Jackson Jr Senior Housing, acquired by POAH from the YMCA of Metro Chicago in 2019, provide  a vital source of quality affordable senior housing in a community that has seen more than its share of disinvestment over the past decades. The properties are located on the former Dixie Square Mall Site – made famous by the Blues Brothers movie in 1980 – in Chicago’s south suburbs and just off two major expressways

    Newberry Park Apartments

    Chicago, IL

    Newberry Park is an 84-unit apartment building on Chicago’s Near West Side close to the Illinois Medical District and The University of Illinois at Chicago. The location is favorable for family housing, with its close proximity to schools, retail, transportation and a park district center with before and after-school services, summer programming and childcare. It is also located across the street from the Chicago Fire Station that serves as a filming location for the NBC television series, Chicago Fire.

    Mattie Butler Apartments

    Chicago, IL

    POAH purchased Eddie Mae and Alex Johnson Apartments (64 units) and Butler Lindon Apartments (42 units) from longtime community-based non-profit Woodlawn East Community and Neighbors (WECAN) in October 2017. Both are vintage apartment hotels that had fallen into disrepair in the mid-late 1990s, which WECAN renovated as much-needed affordable housing with supportive services. POAH acquired the properties in order to preserve WECAN’s housing legacy and invest in much-needed renovations in order to keep the buildings affordable for the long term, while continuing

    Fifth City Commons

    Chicago, IL

    Fifth City Commons is a new-construction affordable housing development in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side with 43 apartments built to Passive House standards.

    The Kenzi at Bartlett Station

    Boston, MA

    The Kenzi at Bartlett Station contains 50 units of supportive, affordable housing for older adults and is part of the five-phase redevelopment of the former bus yard now owned by Nuestra Comunidad and Windale Developers. The Kenzi serves individuals age 55 or older who have either low or middle-income housing needs in 41 affordable one-bedroom apartments and 3 affordable two-bedroom apartments.

    The Asberry at Barry Farm

    Washington, DC

    Opened in 2024, The Asberry, located at 1200 Sumner Road SE, is a mixed-use building with 108 affordable rental apartments with a preference for those aged 55+, thoughtful amenities and over 5,000 square feet of retail space. With a landscape courtyard, a wellness room, a fitness center, a community room and a rooftop amenity space, The Asberry is a hub for engagement and community.

    Woodlawn Station was the last phase in POAH's Woodlawn Choice Initiative, a broad effort to rebuild and revitalize the Woodlawn community and encourage re-investment in this South Side neighborhood of Chicago.

    Flat 9 at Whittier

    Boston, MA

    The first two phases of The Flat 9 at Whittier redevelopment was a collaboration between POAH, Madison Park Development Corporation and the Boston Housing Authority to redevelop the Whittier Street Apartments site in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston. Originally built in the early 1950s, the Whittier Apartments were home to 200 public housing families. Phase three, The Amp at Flat 9, is a collaboration with the Boston Housing Authority that added market rate rentals to the redevelopment.

  • The Asberry

    Barry Farm

    Washington, DC

    The Barry Farm neighborhood is located off Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE, west of historic Anacostia in Washington, D.C. and was originally established in 1867 as the first African-American homeownership community in Washington, D.C. for newly freed slaves. Over time, the original 375-acre site dwindled in size and in 1943 The National Capital Housing Authority acquired 24 acres and built the Barry Farm public housing project.
